Sure it’s about a lamb, and the loss of the lamb is also representative of the loss of John. Songs can have a literal and a symbolic meaning, I think.“The years ahead will show how little we really know”. Is that line about a lamb, or about the dispute with John and the boys? “How did two rights make a wrong?” Does that sound like it’s about the lamb, or about the breakdown of the relationship? “We may never meet again” and “You and I still have a way to go”... are those lines about the deceased lamb? “I have no answer for you”...was that line for the lamb? Well maybe it was, but it sure works well as an answer to John’s question “How do you sleep?”...even though “Little Lamb Dragonfly” was written before “How do you sleep” was released, there was nothing stopping Paul from tweaking the lyrics. Also, early on Paul said “Jet” was about his black lab, and in later years it was about a horse. Maybe it was about both. Similarly, “Little Lamb Dragonfly” could be referring to both of those kids he once knew.
The man could go in the bathroom to take a dump, and write a hit song in less than 5 minutes.. About the same time it took him to write and have the basics for LIVE AND LET DIE....A musical genius.
Beautiful song that was the glue to Red Rose Speedway.Initially recorded during the Ram sessions but eventually made it on RRS with added harmonyfrom Denny Laine who was not involved in Ram at the time of recording. This delightful song reflects more of the power of Pauls Ram period and you can easily see it on that album. One of Pauls gems a pure delight.
All great poetry is individually interpretative. We find what meaning there is for us. Paul may have been totally unaware of the depth of his poetry in the writing of these lyrics. Or not. But that is poetry. Take it. Love it. Find your meaning. Let Paul have his. One of his greats!
