When I was a teenager going to Morehouse College, and draining the water out of every dollar I could, I had the choice of going about a mile away from campus to see Earth Wind and Fire (whose hit at the time was "Devotion") at Morris Brown College, or stay put and see Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson (who took our campus by storm with this here song called "The Bottle"). To this day, I still think it was the best money I have ever spent. Not only was I treated with intimate performances of most of his album "Winter in America," he debut his poem "We Beg Your Pardon (Pardon Our Analysis)" that laid our little gymnasium of an audience to waste. I also think that without him and The Last Poets, Gangsta Rap would simply not exist. And I was there....
